I’m exploring how historic stereographs can be viewed without a traditional viewer using newer versions of iOS with Spatial Scenes on iPad. It opens up some interesting possibilities for teaching with primary sources!
Basic Information
Spatial scenes are a fun way to turn your photos into 3D without a stereoscope viewer (a few of you might remember View Master or 3D glasses). Spatial Scenes can also be shared beautifully on an Apple Vision Pro.

And If you tap on over to the Library of Congress you can get the history of stereographs and also download lots of free to use stereograph cards.
iPads...
iPad Pro (M4 and M5), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Air (M2, M3, and M4), iPad Air (5th generation and later), iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad mini (6th generation).
...can create a subtle 3D effect from images and then be shared by screen recording while slowly moving your iPad side to side and exporting it as a video or animated GIF in Keynote.
It’s a simple but engaging way to deepen students’ connection to historical content.
Steps and Lessons Learned
- Choose stereographs with strong foreground and background depth and download to Photos
- In Photos, crop out the edges of the original card before creating the Spatial Scene
- Tap the octagon in the upper right of Photos to create the Spatial Scene
- Screen record as you move your iPad back and forth
- Edit screen recording and import onto a Keynote presentation slide
- Export slide as a animated gif or video
- Share via Photos
Engaging students to interacting with primary sources connects them to essential questions, motivates investigation and promotes understanding of the stories of history.
There are many historic images students can share. This one might spark a discussion surrounding the upcoming anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence (United States).
