3D Printing New York State Maps – A 4th Grade Interdisciplinary Project

As part of our 4th grade Social Studies unit on New York State, students design and 3D-print their own raised-relief New York State maps using Tinkercad. This lesson blends research, geography, spatial reasoning, and creative design with hands-on 3D modeling skills.

Students work in pairs to research New York State’s major physical and human features, then translate that information into a 3D model that visually communicates what they’ve learned.

Laura - I love that you worked with this with your students. We did something similar do to with the mountain that dominates our area (actually its an 'active' volcano but thats another story). We used Tinkercad to AR/VR the mountain around different locations of our school and then were able to have discussions about some of its features, we did 3D Print it as well.
