Learning with iPad - "Automation Architects"

Context

Getting started on a task is often the hardest part. This advanced lesson introduces students to the Shortcuts app, a powerful tool that allows them to program their iPad to perform a series of actions with a single command. It’s like creating a personal assistant that sets up the perfect work environment for you, every single time.

This is a practical introduction to the logic of automation and coding. Students will learn how to sequence commands—like turning on a Focus Mode, opening a specific app, playing a playlist, and starting a timer—to create a "Study Session" shortcut. They will move beyond being users of technology to becoming its architects.

By learning to automate their routines, students will not only save time and reduce friction but also gain a deeper understanding of cause-and-effect logic, a skill that is fundamental to all forms of programming and problem-solving.

Preparation and Flow

For this lesson, students will need an iPad with the Shortcuts app. They should also have a "Study" Focus Mode configured in their Settings.

The Friction of Starting (5 mins) - Start with a discussion: "How many steps does it take to get ready to study? You have to silence your phone, find your notes, open your book, maybe put on music... What if you could do all of that with one tap?"

Introduce the Shortcuts app as a way to automate those repetitive setup tasks.

A Tour of the Automation Studio (15 mins)

Project the Shortcuts app and guide students through the interface.

Create a New Shortcut: Show them how to tap the + icon to start.

The Action Library: Demonstrate how to use the search bar at the bottom to find and add actions.

Build a Simple Sequence: Model a very simple two-step shortcut, like "Set Focus" -> "Turn Study On." Run it to show the effect. Then add another action, like "Open App" -> "Notes."

The Ultimate Study Shortcut Challenge (20 mins)

Challenge students to build their own "Start Study Session" shortcut. It must include at least three of the following actions:

Set Focus: Turn "Study" Focus Mode "On."

Open App: Open their preferred note-taking or digital planner app.

Play Music: Find and select a "Focus" or "Study" playlist from Apple Music.

Start Timer: Set a timer for a specific duration (e.g., 25 or 45 minutes).

Circulate and help students search for the correct actions and configure their parameters (e.g., choosing the right app or playlist).

Run and Reflect (10 mins)

Have students run their completed shortcuts to test them.

Lead a discussion: "What other routines in your day could you automate?" (e.g., a "Good Morning" shortcut that shows the weather and daily schedule, or a "Wind Down" shortcut that plays calming music and sets an alarm).

Possible Extension

Add to Home Screen: Show students how to add their new shortcut as a custom icon on their Home Screen for even faster access.
