Grow a Maths Garden!

I've spent some of the Term 2 school holidays enjoying playing Grow a Garden with my son on Roblox! While currently being one of the most popular games, it also holds a myriad of maths thinking and opportunities to grow maths learning and problem solving.

To support my Year 2 students with problem solving, multiplication and division I have got inspiration from the game to scaffold my ākonga towards developing their own simple version on Keynote. My students are in Phase 1 of the new Maths Curriculum and I am looking at ways to revise number and strand learning (measurement, time etc) within a word problem context. This maths literacy is designed to scaffold off a game they are familiar with to ease the cognitive load. They can then be creative and grow their own Maths Garden and learning.

You could really take this Grow a Maths Garden Keynote in any Maths direction depending on your students' ages and abilities. It may also be used alongside maths equipment ( e.g. Numicon) to move from concrete, pictorial to abstract thinking (CPA).

I'd love to see how other teachers are tapping into popular culture and gaming to support learning and creativity across the board.
