Storytelling with Photography and Markup

Storytelling with photography and Markup has been a focus area in Term 4 for my Year 1 ākonga (5 and 6 year olds). They have been learning how to take a quality photo and then manipulate the image with Markup to retell a part of a story. We have been focusing on The Legend of Okatia which is an important story from Rangitāne Iwi to explain how Okatia transformed the landscape by making Te Apiti (the Manawatū Gorge) and widened the Manawatū River all the way out to Foxton Beach.

I made a simple Photography and Markup PLD explanation sheet (which I have attached) for our Learning Assistant in an Apple coaching capacity to help her get started with supporting our students in this area.

First we took a photo of a tree in our school environment and then added details with Markup. Afterwards in Pages, we removed the background and added a photo of the Manawatū Gorge and then our simple sentence retell.

Our learning will be turned into an Apple book so that our whānau can enjoy our Okatia digital storytelling.

This could be adapted for any culture that has stories and legends about their natural landscape and environment.
