By the time students reach Algebra II, they are quite familiar with using screen recording to create instructional videos for solving math problems. However, they haven’t had the chance to explore Keynote and its animations before. Instead of simply recording their screen, students utilized Keynote to create their videos. This allowed them to experiment with adding shapes, drawings, and animations to these elements, as well as transitions between slides. Finally, they exported their video as a movie and used iMovie to add background music. Additionally, they had the option to record audio within iMovie to provide further explanation.
Utilize Notes App to Make a “Script”
I had my students use the Notes app to solve the problems first. This way, when they went to create the slide for a specific problem, they could focus on the math first, then add the fun parts, without getting distracted by the process of switching between the two.
Give Them Your Nonnegotiables
I provided students with a comprehensive list of concepts that needed to be covered, along with my expectations for their work after using Keynote and iMovie.
Give Them the Space to Create
I didn’t impose strict guidelines on creativity. When given the necessary time and space, they truly embraced their creativity and produced some truly remarkable videos!
